プライド/誇り[puraido/hokori]: take pride in

"プライド" is Japanese English. It us a noun that has two meanings.

The first meaning is ”self-respect”. It is used to express the respect you have for yourself as a human being. It indicates your wish to eliminate other people's interference into your life. “自尊心“ is a synonym for “プライド” and it is often used in a negative way.

The second meaning is “take pride in”. It is used to express your pleasant feelings about someone/something. “誇り“ is a synonym for “プライド“ and it is often used in a positive way.

Tom and Jim are working together as system engineers.

  • Tom: There’s something wrong with the system. Can you take a look at it?
    なんかシステムの調子がおかしいな。ちょっと、見てくれない?
  • Jim: Sure. Uh-huh, it has some bugs. Do you want me to fix them?
    いいよ。あー、バグあるよ。修正しようか?
  • Tom: Really? Thanks. That's why I like you! Then, how long do you think it will take?
    マジ?ありがとう。さすが!ねぇ、どれくらい(時間は)かかりそう?
  • Jim: I think it won’t take so long.
    そんなにかからないよ。
  • Tom: Wow, you’re such a genius!
    おっ、さすが天才!
  • Jim: I’m proud that I have been working for 5 years as a system engineer. I’ll deal with it in 10 minutes.
    5年間システムエンジニアとして働いているんだぜ。そのプライドにかけて、10分で対応するよ。
Meg and Amy are talking about their job condition.

  • Meg: Who prepared these documents for tomorrow’s meeting? There are so many careless mistakes. I can’t believe nobody noticed even one of them.
    誰が、明日の会議の資料を準備したの?ケアレスミスが沢山あるじゃん。誰も気付かないなんて(信じられない)。
  • Amy: I get you, but calm down!
    分かるけど、落ち着いて!
  • Meg: I really like my job and take pride in my job. I thought that my subordinates were on the same page. They don’t have any dignity, huh?
    私はこの仕事にプライドを持っている。彼らもそうだと思っていた。プライドはないの?
  • Amy: I think we were like them when we started working here.
    私達が働き始めた頃も、彼らと一緒だったと思うよ。
