慣れる[nareru]: get used to

It is a verb that means "to get used to". It is used when describing situations in which you get to know someone/something.

My mom used to wake me up at 5 am when I was a child. So I am used to waking up early.
子供の頃、朝5時に(母に)起こされた。だから、朝早く起きるのは慣れている
Amy started living alone when she joined a company in Tokyo. Her mom is calling her.

  • Mom : How’s your new job?
    新しい仕事はどう?
  • Amy : It’s been only a month since I started working at this company so I’m still finding my feet.
    今の会社で働き始めて、一ヵ月しか経ってないから、まだ慣れていないよ。
  • Mom : I’m sure you will get used to it. How do you find your colleagues? Are they nice?
    大丈夫、そのうち慣れるよ。同僚はどう?いい人達?
  • Amy : Sure. Actually it took me a while to open up to them.… but now I get along better.
    うん。(同僚に)慣れるのに時間はかかったけど、だいぶ仲良くなってきた。
Meg and Ken are working together.

  • Meg : I guess there's something wrong with my laptop. It’s often frozen. Can you take a look at it?
    私のノートパソコン、なんか変(orおかしい)みたい。ちょくちょく(*)フリーズする。ちょっと、見てくれる?
  • Ken : Okay. Let me see…You haven’t defragged your hard drive for a long time. That’s why it was running slower.
    いいよ。どれ...しばらく、ハードディスクのデフラグをしていなかったでしょ。だから、動きが遅いんだよ。
  • Amy : I see. I just don’t understand how to use this laptop because I got it from Leo two weeks ago.
    そっか。二週間前にレオからもらったばかりだから、まだ使い方がわからなくて...。
  • Meg : Don’t worry. You’ll get the hang of it.
    大丈夫。そのうち(パソコンに)慣れるよ。

(*) ちょくちょく means "often". It is a more casual way of saying "よく" and "頻繁に".
