弱る[yowaru]: weaken/not knowing what to do

Do you usually use “疲れる“ or “元気がない“ when you’re tired? Have you heard of “弱る“?
[tsukareru][genki ga nai][yowaru]

“弱る“ is a verb that has two uses.

The first is “to weaken“. It is used to describe a person who doesn't have as much energy as they used to, or something that is weak.

The second is “not knowing what to do”. It is used to describe situations in which you’re worried about how to deal with something.

Ken and Leo are working overtime.

  • Leo: How long are we working today? I’m so tired, but you always look fine. How do you manage these busy days? Don’t you get stressed out at all?
    今日は何時間働いたかな?疲れた。でもケンはいつも元気そうだよね。忙しくても平気なの?ストレス溜まんないの?
  • Ken: No way. If you want my advice, I think you should be patient. I made a huge mistake when I had just started working. So even if I’m drowning
    with work, I feel that it isn’t a big deal looking back on the bitter experiences.
    まさか。忍耐強くならないとね。働き始めたばかりの頃、大きな失敗をしたんだよね。だから、仕事で弱っていても、その苦い経験を思い出すと、大した事ないって思うんだ。
Meg is talking about her grandmother.

  • Meg: I’m going to see my grandmother in the hospital. What should I buy to make her happy?
    病院へ、おばあちゃんに会いに行くんだ。何を買っていったら、喜ぶかな?
  • Amy: What’s wrong?
    どうしたの?
  • Meg: Her legs are getting weaker
    . It’s hard for her to stand alone so she has been hospitalized for a while.
    脚が弱って
    きているの。一人で立つのが難しいから、しばらく入院するの。
  • Amy: I'm sorry to hear that. I’d like to bake a chocolate cake for her if you don't mind.
    お気の毒に。もしよかったら、チョコレートケーキを焼こうかな。
Meg is complaining about the shower in her apartment.

  • Meg: The shower is working but there is not much pressure.
    シャワーが動くけど、(水圧が)弱いの。
  • Amy: Have you already called the repairman?
    もう修理業者に連絡した?
  • Meg: Yes, but he said that he couldn’t fix this type of the shower. I’m at a loss
    on what to do next.
    うん。でも、家のシャワーは修理できないって。弱ったな、どうすればいんだろう。
