得/損[toku][son]: gain/lose

They are nouns/adjective verbs. The verbs, which are "得する" and "損する", are often used.
"得" means "to gain" and it is used when you get benefit or you feel lucky or something is an advantage.
"損" is an antonym for "得" and it is used when you lose something or you feel ripped off or something is a disadvantage.

Ken and Leo are talking about what kind of TV programs they want to watch.

  • Ken : Do you want to watch Game of Thrones?
    ゲーム・オブ・スローンズ見る?
  • Leo : Is it good? I've never seen it.
    面白いの?見た事(が)ない。
  • Ken : You are missing out (on half of your life)!
    (人生の半分を)損しているいよ(*)!
    *"人生の半分を損している" is a common phrase.
Meg and Amy are talking about her friend.

  • Meg : Kumi is quite pretty. She has a good-looking boyfriend and she always the ceter of attention.
    クミって綺麗だよね。格好良い彼氏がいるし、皆の注目の的(*)だよね。
    * "注目の的" is a common phrase.
  • Amy : As everybody says, being beautiful is really beneficial.
    やっぱり、美人は得だよね。
  • Meg : That's sure. And, she looks younger than she really is. I'm jealous.
    そうだね。それにさ、若く見えるよね。いいな。
  • Amy : I think that looking young can be a disadvantage depending on the situation. That reminds me, our new clients mistook her for the newbie the other day, even though she has more experience under her belt.
    状況によっては、若く見えるのは損すると思うよ。そうそう、この間クライアントがクミを新人だと思ったんだよ。業務経験が豊富なのに。
Meg and Amy are talking about their job.

  • Meg : I was supposed to take a TOEIC exam to get a promotion, but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Huh, I'm discouraged because I've been working hard!
    昇進する為、TOEICを受けるつもりだったけど、コロナの流行で中止になったの。一生懸命勉強して損した
  • Amy : Our promotion is definitely going to be delayed. I wonder if I should change my job. I wanted to be a hairdresser when I was a kid.
    確実に、昇進は遅れるね。転職しようかな。子供の頃、美容師になりたかったなぁ。
  • Meg : Sounds nice! We only live once, so we have to live our lives to the fullest. If we don't do what we want we'll lose out.
    いいじゃん!人生一度きり、楽しまなきゃ。やりたい事をやらないと、損するよ。
Ken and Leo are talking about the watches that they've bought.

  • Ken : Look. Isn't this watch cool? I got it at 30% discount from the regular price. I feel lucky.
    見て。この時計、格好良いでしょ?定価の30%で買ったんだ。得した気分。
  • Leo : Really? I have the same watch but different color. I bought it at regular price six months ago. Hmmm, I feel cheated.
    マジ?同じのの色違い(or違う色)を持っている。6カ月前に定価で買った。なんか、損した気分だな。
